Al-Ḥalīm — The Forbearing
وَاعْلَمُوا أَنَّ اللَّهَ غَفُورٌ حَلِيمٌ
There is no sin for you in that which ye proclaim or hide in your minds concerning your troth with women. Allah knoweth that ye will remember them. But plight not your troth with women except by uttering a recognised form of words. And do not consummate the marriage until (the term) prescribed is run. Know that Allah knoweth what is in your minds, so beware of Him; and know that Allah is Forgiving, Clement
Surah Al-Baqarah (2:235)
النية
Today, I will give someone a second chance without making them feel guilty about needing one.
تأمّل
Al-Ḥalīm is The Forbearing — the One who sees the sin, has full power to punish immediately, and yet delays. Not out of indifference, but out of wisdom and mercy. He gives time for repentance, for change, for growth. In relationships, ḥilm — forbearance — is the ability to absorb another person's mistakes without retaliating, without withdrawing love, without keeping score. It is not weakness; it is the conscious choice to give someone another chance because that is what Al-Ḥalīm does for you.
في هذه الآية
Ghafūr and Ḥalīm paired together — He forgives, and He is in no rush to punish. This pairing occurs eight times in the Quran, each time in a context where humans have been given space to correct themselves.
There is no deity except Allah, the Great, the Forbearing. There is no deity except Allah, Lord of the Mighty Throne. There is no deity except Allah, Lord of the heavens, Lord of the earth, and Lord of the Noble Throne.
Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 6346, Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 2730
The du'a of distress — karb. When everything is overwhelming, you call upon Al-Ḥalīm, the Forbearing. In your worst moment, He is patient with you.
حديث
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said to Ashaj 'Abd al-Qays: 'You have two qualities that Allah loves: forbearance and deliberateness.'
— Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 17
