Our Privacy Commitment
AskSakina is built with privacy as a core principle. Your spiritual journey is personal, and we believe your data should stay that way. We do not sell, share, or track your personal information.
Quick Summary
- Local-first storage most data stays on your device.
- No personal tracking cookieless, no user profiles, no advertising.
- Your data, your control export or delete anytime.
- No account required use immediately, no sign-up.
Data We Store
On Your Device Only
The following data is stored locally using your browser's localStorage and never leaves your device:
- Prayer preferences notification settings
- Fasting records dates and types of fasts logged
- Dhikr statistics counter totals
- Adhkar progress completion status for daily adhkar
- App preferences theme, display settings
Location Data
If you grant permission, we access your location for prayer times, Qibla direction, and weather. Your exact coordinates are stored locally on your device. To fetch prayer times and weather, your device sends a rounded, approximate area (roughly 1.1 km resolution) to our server. AskSakina proxies this rounded area to our providers (Aladhan for global times, OpenWeatherMap for weather). If you are in London, we use the London Unified Prayer Timetable, which receives no location data. Because our server acts as a middleman, these third parties never receive your exact location or your IP address.
AI Features
Some features (soul comfort, halal scanner) use Google's Gemini AI. When you use these, only the text you submit, or the label photo you take for the halal scanner, is sent to Google, no personal identifiers are included. These features are optional and clearly labeled.
Error Tracking
Server errors are logged with the error name and code only. No personal content (prayers, mood entries, fasting logs), no page path, no IP address and no device identifier is written to an error log. We do not run a third-party error-tracking service in production.
Analytics
We use Vercel Web Analytics to count aggregate page views. We send it nothing else: no identifier, no counter and no event of our own.
We monitor overall app health and usage through strictly anonymous, aggregated daily counts. This includes counting visits by country (determined at the network edge, with the IP address immediately discarded) and recording which tools or client applications access our server. We do not store IP addresses, track exact locations, or use cookies or local storage to identify returning users.
When the app loads, it sends one empty message to our server. Our server checks the browser type in memory, so that automated visitors such as search-engine crawlers are left out, reads the country from the network edge, and adds one to that day's count for that country. The browser type and the IP address are not kept. Nothing is stored on your device for this. It never runs on the support, comfort, Speak to Me, new Muslim, exploring Islam or onboarding pages.
No page views and no visit event are ever sent from these paths, in any language: /reverts, /curious, /find-support, /comfort, /onboarding and /quran/speak-to-me. Visiting those pages does not update the stored last-opened date either.
Vercel counts daily unique visitors with a temporary hash computed at its edge from the request's IP address and browser details, salted with a value that changes every day, so it cannot be used to follow one person from day to day. In transit Vercel derives the country, the region (state or province) and the device type from the request and does not store the IP address. We also use Vercel Speed Insights, which reports anonymous page-speed measurements per page type; the same six paths are excluded from it. This processing is done by Vercel Inc. on its global edge network, including in the United States.
These counts are kept by AskSakina only as daily totals in our own database (Upstash Redis) for 90 days: how many times the app was loaded each day, and from which countries. There is no record of any single visit.
Legal basis: our legitimate interest in knowing, in aggregate, whether the app is used and whether it stays fast (UK GDPR Article 6(1)(f)). No cookies are used for any of this.
Infrastructure & Fonts
AskSakina uses Vercel to host and deliver the app. Vercel may collect anonymised page-view and performance data as part of its infrastructure services (Web Analytics and Speed Insights). We also load font files from Google Fonts CDN. Neither service is used for advertising. For details, see Vercel's Privacy Policy and Google's Privacy Policy.
AI agent server
AskSakina also runs a separate server (hosted on Fly.io) that AI assistants can query for Qur'an verses, du'as and the Names of Allah, with teaching notes. That server keeps running totals only: how many calls each tool received and how they ended, how many responses carried a teaching note, a tally of the optional audience setting an assistant may send (curious, revert, practising, unknown, or none), and how often each learning prompt was fetched. Totals are kept per day for at most 90 days. It stores no query text, no verse references, no account, session or device identifiers, and nothing about any individual. Its full privacy statement is in the server's README.
