Tender Devotion

١٤ محرم ١٤٤٨

الرَّؤُوفُ

Ar-RaʼūfThe Most Kind

إِنَّ اللَّهَ بِالنَّاسِ لَرَءُوفٌ رَّحِيمٌ

Thus We have appointed you a middle nation, that ye may be witnesses against mankind, and that the messenger may be a witness against you. And We appointed the qiblah which ye formerly observed only that We might know him who followeth the messenger, from him who turneth on his heels. In truth it was a hard (test) save for those whom Allah guided. But it was not Allah's purpose that your faith should be in vain, for Allah is Full of Pity, Merciful toward mankind

Surah Al-Baqarah (2:143)

النية

Today, my worship will be tender — not rigid, not mechanical, but the soft devotion of someone who knows they are loved.

تأمّل

Ar-Raʾūf is The Compassionate — a tenderness beyond mercy. Raḥmah is mercy; raʾfah is the kind of mercy that aches. It is the compassion of a mother who cannot bear to see her child in pain. Allah describes Himself with this quality — He aches for you, in a way that befits His majesty. Sacred devotion, then, is not cold discipline. It is tender. It is the devotion of someone who knows they are loved with an aching, protective compassion.

في هذه الآية

Raʾūf before Raḥīm — compassion before mercy. He feels for you before He acts for you. The feeling precedes the giving.

دعاء

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ مِنْ فَضْلِكَ وَرَحْمَتِكَ فَإِنَّهُ لَا يَمْلِكُهَا إِلَّا أَنتَ

O Allah, I ask You from Your bounty and Your mercy, for none possesses them but You.

Sunan at-Tirmidhī 3571, graded ḥasan

Asking for His bounty AND His mercy — because bounty without mercy is cold, and mercy without bounty is powerless. He has both.

حديث

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 'Allah divided mercy into one hundred parts. He kept ninety-nine parts with Himself and sent down one part to the earth. From that one part comes all the compassion that creatures show to one another.'
