Praise in the Hunger

الْحَمِيدُ

Al-Ḥamīd — The Praiseworthy

وَلِتُكَبِّرُوا اللَّهَ عَلَى مَا هَدَاكُمْ وَلَعَلَّكُمْ تَشْكُرُونَ

The month of Ramadan in which was revealed the Qur'an, a guidance for mankind, and clear proofs of the guidance, and the Criterion (of right and wrong). And whosoever of you is present, let him fast the month, and whosoever of you is sick or on a journey, (let him fast the same) number of other days. Allah desireth for you ease; He desireth not hardship for you; and (He desireth) that ye should complete the period, and that ye should magnify Allah for having guided you, and that peradventure ye may be thankful

Niat

Today, between hunger and thirst, I will find room for praise. The emptiness makes the praise purer.

Renungan

Al-Ḥamīd on day five — and the fast offers a particular kind of clarity. When the rhythms of eating slow down, awareness sharpens; the small mercies you eat through become visible again. Every iftar, the cool sip of water — first noticed because of its absence — becomes a visceral lesson in gratitude. Al-Ḥamīd is praised across all states: by the well-fed in their abundance and by the fasting in their consciousness. The fast simply trains the eye to see what was always there: every breath, every blessing, deserves praise.

The end of the Ramadan verse — its purpose is takbīr (glorifying Allah for guidance) and shukr (gratitude). Not suffering. Not discipline. Glorification and gratitude.

Doa

The opening of the Prophet (peace be upon him)'s night prayer — an outpouring of praise to the Light of everything. In Ramadan's nights, this praise carries the weight of an entire day's fast behind it.

Hadis

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 'The most beloved words to Allah are four: Subḥān Allāh, al-ḥamdulillāh, lā ilāha illa Allāh, and Allāhu akbar. It does not matter which of them you say first.'
