Marriage is described as a 'mithaq' - a solemn covenant. It's meant to bring tranquility, love, and mercy. When it's hard, return to the manual. Allah designed it; He knows how it works best.
“And of His signs is this: He created for you helpmeets from yourselves that ye might find rest in them, and He ordained between you love and mercy. Lo! herein indeed are portents for folk who reflect.”
Surah 30:21- 1
“It is made lawful for you to go in unto your wives on the night of the fast. They are raiment for you and ye are raiment for them. Allah is Aware that ye were deceiving yourselves in this respect and He hath turned in mercy toward you and relieved you. So hold intercourse with them and seek that which Allah hath ordained for you, and eat and drink until the white thread becometh distinct to you from the black thread of the dawn. Then strictly observe the fast till nightfall and touch them not, but be at your devotions in the mosques. These are the limits imposed by Allah, so approach them not. Thus Allah expoundeth His revelations to mankind that they may ward off (evil).”
Surah 2:187Clothing protects. Covers flaws. Warms. Beautifies. That's your job for each other. Not fixing. Not criticizing. Protecting.
- 2
“O ye who believe! It is not lawful for you forcibly to inherit the women (of your deceased kinsmen), nor (that) ye should put constraint upon them that ye may take away a part of that which ye have given them, unless they be guilty of flagrant lewdness. But consort with them in kindness, for if ye hate them it may happen that ye hate a thing wherein Allah hath placed much good.”
Surah 4:19Live with them in kindness. Even when you don't feel it. Even when they frustrate you. There might be good in what annoys you that you can't see.

“He it is Who did create you from a single soul, and therefrom did make his mate that he might take rest in her. And when he covered her she bore a light burden, and she passed (unnoticed) with it, but when it became heavy they cried unto Allah, their Lord, saying: If thou givest unto us aright we shall be of the thankful.”
Surah 7:189The goal of marriage in one word: security. A place to breathe. A person who's safe. Are you that for them?
- 4
“And who say: Our Lord! Vouchsafe us comfort of our wives and of our offspring, and make us patterns for (all) those who ward off (evil).”
Surah 25:74'Coolness of eyes.' That's the dua. A spouse you look at and feel peace. Ask for this. Keep asking.
- 5
“O ye who believe! Ward off from yourselves and your families a Fire whereof the fuel is men and stones, over which are set angels strong, severe, who resist not Allah in that which He commandeth them, but do that which they are commanded.”
Surah 66:6You're not just building a life. You're helping each other reach Jannah. That's the real project. Everything else is details.
