Valleys That Hold Water

١٥ صفر ١٤٤٨

الْخَافِضُ

Al-KhāfiḍThe Abaser

أَنزَلَ مِنَ السَّمَاءِ مَاءً فَسَالَتْ أَوْدِيَةٌ بِقَدَرِهَا

He sendeth down water from the sky, so that valleys flow according to their measure, and the flood beareth (on its surface) swelling foam - from that which they smelt in the fire in order to make ornaments and tools riseth a foam like unto it - thus Allah coineth (the similitude of) the true and the false. Then, as for the foam, it passeth away as scum upon the banks, while, as for that which is of use to mankind, it remaineth in the earth. Thus Allah coineth the similitudes

Surah Ar-Ra'd (13:17)

النية

Today, I will identify one area of pride or complacency and humble myself in it — creating a valley in my heart for Ramadan's rain.

تأمّل

Al-Khāfiḍ at cosmic scale creates the low places — the valleys, the ocean floors, the depressions in the earth. And these low places are where water gathers, where life concentrates, where fertility is richest. Spiritually, the heart that has been humbled is the heart that receives. Shaʿbān is the month to lower yourself — through fasting, through repentance, through honest self-assessment — so that when Ramadan rains mercy, your heart is a valley ready to receive it.

في هذه الآية

According to their capacity — bi-qadarihā. Each valley receives according to its size. The deeper the valley, the more water it holds. The more humble the heart, the more mercy it can contain.

دعاء

اللَّهُمَّ اجْعَلْنِي مِنَ التَّوَّابِينَ وَاجْعَلْنِي مِنَ الْمُتَطَهِّرِينَ

O Allah, make me among those who constantly repent and make me among those who purify themselves.

Sunan at-Tirmidhī 55, graded ṣaḥīḥ

Repentance and purification — the twin preparations for Ramadan. Tawbah clears the past; ṭahārah cleanses the present.

حديث

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 'Whoever humbles himself for the sake of Allah, Allah will raise him.'

Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 2588
