The Friend Who Stays

٧ رمضان ١٤٤٧

الْوَلِيُّ

Al-WaliyyThe Protecting Friend

اللَّهُ وَلِيُّ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا يُخْرِجُهُم مِّنَ الظُّلُمَاتِ إِلَى النُّورِ ۖ

Allah is the Protecting Guardian of those who believe. He bringeth them out of darkness into light. As for those who disbelieve, their patrons are false deities. They bring them out of light into darkness. Such are rightful owners of the Fire. They will abide therein

Surah Al-Baqarah (2:257)

النية

Today, I will be a loyal friend to someone — reflecting the wilāyah that Al-Waliyy shows me.

تأمّل

Al-Waliyy is The Protecting Friend — wali carries the sense of closeness, of guardianship, of alliance. He is not a distant benefactor. He is the close ally, the one who stays when others leave. Human friendships have limits. Divine wilāyah does not. Al-Waliyy is the friend you cannot lose.

في هذه الآية

Darknesses — plural. Light — singular. Many kinds of darkness, one destination of light. Al-Waliyy guides you through all of them to the same place.

دعاء

اللَّهُمَّ أَنْتَ وَلِيِّي فِي الدُّنْيَا وَالآخِرَةِ

O my Lord! Thou hast given me (something) of sovereignty and hast taught me (something) of the interpretation of events - Creator of the heavens and the earth! Thou art my Protecting Guardian in the world and the Hereafter. Make me to die muslim (unto Thee), and join me to the righteous

Derived from Surah Yūsuf (12:101)

The prayer of Yūsuf, peace be upon him, after decades of trial. Even after everything he endured, he called Allah his walī.

حديث

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Allah said: Whoever shows hostility to a friend of Mine, I have declared war against him.”
