Death in Islam is a return — not an end. The Quran reminds the bereaved that we belong to Allah, and the journey returns to Him.
Those who, when affliction strikes them, say: 'Truly we belong to Allah, and truly to Him we shall return.'
Quran, Al-Baqarah 2:156
When You First Hear the News
Innā lillāhi wa innā ilayhi rājiʿūn
Truly we belong to Allah, and truly to Him we shall return.
Quran, Al-Baqarah 2:156. The Prophet (peace be upon him) taught it for every loss.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) added a personal du'a after this phrase that he taught Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) when her husband died:
Allāhumma ʾjurnī fī muṣībatī wa akhlif lī khayran minhā
O Allah, reward me in my affliction and replace what I have lost with something better.
Sahih Muslim 918.
Du'a in the Funeral Prayer (Janazah)
The funeral prayer (salat al-janazah) is a brief standing prayer with four takbirs and no bowing or prostration. After the third takbir, the imam recites a du'a for the deceased. The most authentic version, taught by the Prophet (peace be upon him), is:
Allāhumma'ghfir lahu wa-rḥamhu, wa ʿāfihi wa-ʿfu ʿanhu, wa akrim nuzulahu, wa wassiʿ mudkhalahu, wa-ghsilhu bi'l-māʾi wa'th-thalji wa'l-barad, wa naqqihi mina'l-khaṭāyā kamā naqqayta'th-thawba'l-abyaḍa mina'd-danas, wa abdilhu dāran khayran min dārih, wa ahlan khayran min ahlih, wa zawjan khayran min zawjih, wa adkhilhu'l-jannah, wa aʿidh-hu min ʿadhābi'l-qabri wa min ʿadhābi'n-nār
O Allah, forgive him and have mercy on him. Pardon him and grant him well-being. Honour his place of arrival, expand his entry. Wash him with water and snow and hail. Cleanse him of sins as a white garment is cleansed of stains. Replace his home with a better home, his family with a better family, his spouse with a better spouse. Admit him to Paradise. Protect him from the punishment of the grave and the punishment of the Fire.
Sahih Muslim 963.
Use the masculine form (lahu, ʿanhu) for a man and the feminine (lahā, ʿanhā, etc.) for a woman.
Du'a When Visiting the Grave
When visiting a Muslim cemetery, the Prophet (peace be upon him) taught his companions to greet those who have passed:
As-salāmu ʿalaykum ahla'd-diyāri mina'l-muʾminīna wa'l-muslimīn, wa innā in shāʾa'llāhu bikum la-lāḥiqūn, asʾalu'llāha lanā wa lakumu'l-ʿāfiyah
Peace be upon you, people of the dwellings, the believers and the Muslims. We will, Allah willing, join you. I ask Allah for well-being for us and for you.
Sahih Muslim 975.
Words of Condolence
When comforting someone who has lost a loved one, the Prophet (peace be upon him) said:
Inna lillāhi mā akhadh, wa lahu mā aʿṭā, wa kullun ʿindahu bi-ajalin musammā, fa-l-taṣbir wa-l-taḥtasib
Truly, to Allah belongs what He has taken and to Him belongs what He has given. Everything with Him is for an appointed term — so be patient and seek the reward from Him.
Sahih Bukhari 1284.
Tears at a funeral are not against the Sunnah. The Prophet (peace be upon him) wept when his son Ibrahim died and said: 'The eye sheds tears and the heart grieves, but we say only what pleases our Lord.' (Sahih Bukhari 1303). Grief is a deeply natural response; the prophetic guidance is simply to anchor the heart and avoid complete despair.
How to Pray for Someone After They Die
- Continue making du'a for them — du'a from the living reaches the deceased.
- Give sadaqah (charity) on their behalf.
- Recite Quran with the intention that its reward reaches them.
- Honour their memory with the relationships they loved — visit their friends, care for their family.
- If they had unfulfilled obligations (a missed fast, an unpaid debt, a hajj they intended), where possible, complete it for them.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "When a person dies, his deeds end, except three: ongoing charity, knowledge that benefits, or a righteous child who prays for him." (Sahih Muslim 1631). To pray for a parent, sibling, or friend who has died is itself one of the most meaningful acts of love.
Pastoral content for grief, qadr (divine decree), and the questions of loss.
