The first time I went to Umrah — a voluntary pilgrimage to Mecca — I expected it to be busy. And it was. Crowds from every corner of the world, every language brushing past me, the noise of millions of people moving in the same direction. I expected to feel small in that.
What I didn't expect was to feel calm.
I know that's not everyone's experience there. It hasn't always been mine, before or since. But in that moment — surrounded by all of it, the rush, the cultures I didn't share, languages I didn't speak — something quieter settled in. A sense of being seen. A sense of forgiveness. An ease that came in spite of the chaos. I wasn't outside the world. I was right in the middle of it. And still, I felt at peace.
That stayed with me.
When I came home, I started paying closer attention to the spiritual apps people were using. They mostly did one of two things: counted you, or sold to you. Streaks. Stats. Reminders that buzzed at the wrong moment. Tiers. Gentle nags dressed up as encouragement. None of it felt like what I had felt in Mecca.
So I started building something else.
Sakina doesn't compete for your attention. It doesn't sell your data, run ads, or push notifications at you. It doesn't turn worship into a game.
What it does is meet you. By time of day. By how you're feeling. By where you are in your journey — whether you've been Muslim your whole life, found Islam recently, or are simply curious and want to understand. Reading journeys you can take at your own pace, with no one keeping score. Duas — short prayers and supplications — for the situation you're actually in. Prayer times. A scanner for halal (permissible) ingredients. A quiet space when you need one.
Most of it works offline. Most of it is free. Some things may ask for support down the line — never to unlock features, only to help keep this growing. The intent hasn't changed since the beginning: to benefit you, and to benefit the Ummah, the global Muslim community. Nothing else.
If something here helps you, alhamdulillah — all praise to God.
If you'd like to write to us — about something that didn't work, a question, a thought, or a request for content — please do. We read every message.
If you are in crisis or feeling unsafe, Sakina cannot replace real human support. But we won't leave you without a hand. Find support →
May Allah accept this effort.
