Wudu (also written wuduʾ or wudhu) means "purification." It is a physical and spiritual reset: water on the face, hands, head, and feet, with the intention of preparing to stand before Allah. Without wudu, the daily prayer is not valid.
يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوٓا۟ إِذَا قُمْتُمْ إِلَى ٱلصَّلَوٰةِ فَٱغْسِلُوا۟ وُجُوهَكُمْ وَأَيْدِيَكُمْ إِلَى ٱلْمَرَافِقِ وَٱمْسَحُوا۟ بِرُءُوسِكُمْ وَأَرْجُلَكُمْ إِلَى ٱلْكَعْبَيْنِ
O ye who believe! When ye rise up for prayer, wash you faces, and your hands up to the elbows, and lightly rub your heads and (wash) your feet up to the ankles.

The Four Obligatory Parts
The Quran names four actions that must be done for wudu to count:
- Wash the face (forehead to chin, ear to ear).
- Wash the arms up to and including the elbows.
- Wipe the head (the schools differ on how much — Hanafis: a quarter; Malikis and Hanbalis: the whole head; Shafi'is: any small part). (Hanbalis include wiping the ears as part of this obligation).
- Wash the feet up to and including the ankles.
Note: The Shafi'i, Maliki, and Hanbali schools consider intention (niyyah) a strict obligation for wudu to be valid. The Hanafi school considers wudu technically valid without a specific niyyah, though making one is strongly recommended.
The Recommended Steps (Sunnah)
The Prophet (peace be upon him) taught a fuller method. Following it earns extra reward without making the obligatory parts harder.
- Begin in the name of Allah: "Bismillah."
- Wash both hands up to the wrists, three times.
- Rinse the mouth three times.
- Sniff water into the nostrils and blow it out, three times.
- Wash the face three times.
- Wash the right arm up to the elbow, then the left arm, three times each.
- Wipe the head with wet hands, once — front to back, then back to front.
- Wipe the inside and outside of the ears with the wet fingers, once.
- Wash the right foot up to the ankle, then the left foot, three times each.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Whoever performs wudu well, his sins exit from his body — even from under his fingernails." (Sahih Muslim 245). A small daily reset, with weight beyond the water itself.
Du'a After Wudu
After completing wudu, raise your gaze to the sky and say:
أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا ٱللَّهُ وَحْدَهُ لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ، وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ
Ashhadu an lā ilāha illā'llāhu waḥdahu lā sharīka lahu, wa ashhadu anna Muḥammadan ʿabduhu wa rasūluh
I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, alone, with no partner, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and messenger.
Sahih Muslim 234.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said that after this du'a, the eight gates of Paradise are opened for the believer to enter through whichever they wish (Sahih Muslim 234).
What Invalidates Wudu
- Anything that exits from the front or back passage (urine, stool, gas).
- Deep sleep where you lose awareness of your surroundings.
- Loss of consciousness.
- Direct sexual contact (the schools differ on whether ordinary touch breaks wudu — Hanafis: no; Shafi'is: yes; Malikis and Hanbalis: only if accompanied by desire).
- Flowing blood or pus (the Hanafi school considers this an invalidator; other schools do not).
If any of these happen, you need to renew your wudu before the next prayer. Otherwise, one wudu is valid for as many prayers as you wish to perform.
Tayammum: When Water Is Not Available
If water is genuinely unavailable, or using it would harm you (illness, severe cold, etc.), you may perform tayammum — a symbolic purification with clean earth. Strike the palms once on a clean surface, wipe the face, then strike again and wipe both hands up to the wrists. Tayammum lasts until water becomes available.
Wudu is a quiet act. It does not need to be theatrical. Use a modest amount of water, take your time over each step, and remember whose presence you are preparing to enter.
