الْمَتِينُ

Al-Matīn — The Firm

لَئِن شَكَرْتُمْ لَأَزِيدَنَّكُمْ ۖ وَلَئِن كَفَرْتُمْ إِنَّ عَذَابِي لَشَدِيدٌ

And when your Lord proclaimed: If ye give thanks, I will give you more; but if ye are thankless, lo! My punishment is dire

Intention

Today, I will practise firm gratitude — saying alhamdulillah not only for what I love but also for what I find difficult.

Reflection

Al-Matīn is The Firm, The Steadfast — the One whose strength never wavers, never fluctuates, never depends on circumstances. In the relational lens of gratitude, this Name asks: is your gratitude firm? Or does it rise and fall with your fortune? The truly grateful person is grateful in ease and in hardship — not because they enjoy suffering, but because they recognise the Giver behind every condition. Firmness in gratitude is firmness in faith.

On this verse

The most famous gratitude verse in the Quran — a divine promise. Gratitude triggers increase. Not might, not perhaps — la-azīdannakum, with the emphatic lām and nūn. He WILL increase you.

Du'a

In every condition — 'alā kulli ḥāl. Not just the good ones. The firmness of this phrase is its power.

Hadith

The Prophet (peace be upon him) when something pleased him, would say: 'Al-ḥamdu lillāhilladhī bi ni'matihī tatimmuṣ-ṣāliḥāt.' And when something displeased him, he would say: 'Al-ḥamdu lillāhi 'alā kulli ḥāl.'
