Day 176
Goodness Everywhere
10 Muharram 1448
الْبَرُّ
Al-Barr — The Source of Goodness
إِنَّهُ هُوَ الْبَرُّ الرَّحِيمُ
Lo! we used to pray unto Him of old. Lo! He is the Benign, the Merciful
Surah Aṭ-Ṭūr (52:28)
Intention
Today, every time I experience something good — a kind word, a beautiful sight, a moment of peace — I will trace it back to Al-Barr.
Reflection
Al-Barr is The Source of All Goodness — the One from whom every act of kindness, every beautiful moment, every gentle word ultimately originates. When someone is good to you, Al-Barr is the source. When beauty catches your breath, Al-Barr is the artist. When a stranger smiles at you, Al-Barr is the one who placed that smile in their heart. Gratitude for Al-Barr is gratitude for the goodness woven into the fabric of existence — it is everywhere, if you learn to see it.
On this verse
Al-Barr ar-Raḥīm — the Good and the Merciful. Goodness is His character, and mercy is His method. Everything good you have ever experienced flowed from this combination.
Du'a
يَا بَرُّ يَا رَحِيمُ يَا سَمِيعَ الدُّعَاءِ
O Good One, O Merciful One, O Hearer of prayer!
General supplication
Three Names in one invocation: Good, Merciful, Hearer. The One who is good, whose method is mercy, and who hears when you call.
Hadith
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 'Birr (goodness) is good character, and sin is whatever bothers your conscience and you dislike that people would find out about.'
