Day 313

Deep Listening

29 Jumada al-Awwal 1448

السَّمِيعُ

As-Samī‘The All-Hearing

قَدْ سَمِعَ اللَّهُ قَوْلَ الَّتِي تُجَادِلُكَ فِي زَوْجِهَا

Allah hath heard the saying of her that disputeth with thee (Muhammad) concerning her husband, and complaineth unto Allah. And Allah heareth your colloquy. Lo! Allah is Hearer, Knower

Surah Al-Mujādilah (58:1)

Intention

Today, I will listen to someone the way As-Samīʿ listens — hearing what is said and what is not said.

Reflection

As-Samīʿ integrated: listen deeply. Not just to words, but to what is behind them. The child who says 'I'm fine' but is not. The spouse who says 'nothing' but means everything. The friend who laughs but is breaking. As-Samīʿ hears beyond the surface. So should you.

On this verse

He heard what even the person in the room could not hear. Hear like that.

Du'a

سَمِعَ اللَّهُ لِمَنْ حَمِدَهُ

Allah hears the one who praises Him.

Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 795

Every rak'ah declares it: He hears. Your job is to hear too.

Hadith

The Prophet (peace be upon him) would give his full attention to whoever spoke to him.

Ash-Shamāʾil al-Muḥammadiyyah 347 (graded ṣaḥīḥ by al-Albānī)
