Day 319
Forbearance as Legacy
5 Jumada al-Thani 1448
الْحَلِيمُ
Al-Ḥalīm — The Forbearing
وَاعْلَمُوا أَنَّ اللَّهَ غَفُورٌ حَلِيمٌ
There is no sin for you in that which ye proclaim or hide in your minds concerning your troth with women. Allah knoweth that ye will remember them. But plight not your troth with women except by uttering a recognised form of words. And do not consummate the marriage until (the term) prescribed is run. Know that Allah knoweth what is in your minds, so beware of Him; and know that Allah is Forgiving, Clement
Surah Al-Baqarah (2:235)
Intention
Today, my forbearance will be deliberate — absorbing one wrong without retaliating, as Al-Ḥalīm absorbs my wrongs daily.
Reflection
Al-Ḥalīm integrated: your forbearance will be your legacy. After four cycles, ḥilm — the ability to absorb wrong without retaliating — has become your defining quality. People will not remember your achievements as much as they remember how you treated them when they failed you. Al-Ḥalīm's forbearance with humanity is the model. Make it yours.
On this verse
Ghafūr and Ḥalīm — He forgives, and He is patient. Eight times this pairing appears in the Quran.
Du'a
لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ الْعَظِيمُ الْحَلِيمُ
There is no deity except Allah, the Great, the Forbearing.
Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 6346, Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 2730
The du'a of distress — calling on the Forbearing in your moment of least patience.
Hadith
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said to Ashaj ʿAbd al-Qays: 'You have two qualities Allah loves: forbearance and deliberateness.'
— Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 17
