What Endures
18 Shawwal 1447
الْبَاقِي
Al-Bāqī — The Everlasting
كُلُّ مَنْ عَلَيْهَا فَانٍ * وَيَبْقَى وَجْهُ رَبِّكَ ذُو الْجَلَالِ وَالْإِكْرَامِ
Everyone that is thereon will pass away; There remaineth but the Countenance of thy Lord of Might and Glory
Surah Ar-Raḥmān (55:26-27)
Intention
Today, I will invest time in knowledge that will benefit me beyond this life.
Reflection
Al-Bāqī is The Everlasting — the One who remains after everything else has passed. In a month dedicated to seeking knowledge, this Name asks the deepest question: what kind of knowledge survives? Degrees expire. Skills become obsolete. Trends vanish. But the knowledge that connects you to Al-Bāqī — the knowledge of who He is, what He wants from you, and where you are going — that knowledge outlasts the universe itself.
On this verse
Everything upon the earth — every library, every institution, every civilisation — will perish. What remains is only Him. The knowledge worth chasing is the knowledge that leads you to what remains.
Du'a
يَا حَيُّ يَا قَيُّومُ بِرَحْمَتِكَ أَسْتَغِيثُ
O Ever-Living, O Sustainer of all, by Your mercy I seek relief.
Sunan at-Tirmidhī 3524, graded ḥasan
Calling upon the Ever-Living — because only what is alive and eternal can sustain what is mortal and passing.
Hadith
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 'The world is cursed and everything in it is cursed, except the remembrance of Allah and what is conducive to that, or a scholar, or a student of knowledge.'
