Scholars Differ
Do I have to grow a beard?
Short Answer
The majority of classical scholars considered it obligatory for men. Some scholars, particularly in the Shafi'i tradition, consider it strongly recommended but not strictly obligatory.

Trim the moustache and grow the beard
Sahih al-Bukhari #5893
- scholarly opinion
Hanafi, Maliki, Hanbali: obligatory. Shafi'i: strongly recommended.
Schools differ on whether the command constitutes obligation or strong recommendation
"You're not a real Muslim without a beard." Even scholars who consider it obligatory would never say someone's Islam is invalid without a beard.
Growing a beard is at minimum highly recommended. But if you're a new Muslim, don't let the beard question become a source of anxiety. Focus on prayer, faith, and character first.
