Obligatory
Is nail polish allowed? Does it affect my wudu?
Short Answer
Standard nail polish creates a barrier against water, making wudu invalid. "Breathable" polish is a subject of debate.
- hadith
The Prophet (peace be upon him) saw a man who left a dry spot on his foot and told him to go back and perform wudu properly
Sahih Muslim #243
That you can wipe over the polish like you wipe over socks. Wiping is only allowed for socks (khuffs), not nails.
Wear nail polish only during times you are not praying (e.g., during menstruation) or remove it before wudu. If using "breathable" polish, verify certification but know many scholars advise against it to be safe.
