Day 209

The Expanding Universe

14 Safar 1448

الْبَاسِطُ

Al-BāsiṭThe Expander

وَالسَّمَاءَ بَنَيْنَاهَا بِأَيْدٍ وَإِنَّا لَمُوسِعُونَ

We have built the heaven with might, and We it is Who make the vast extent (thereof)

Surah Adh-Dhāriyāt (51:47)

Intention

Today, I will make space in my life — in my schedule, in my heart — for what Ramadan will bring.

Reflection

Al-Bāsiṭ at cosmic scale is breathtaking: the universe is literally expanding. Every galaxy is moving away from every other galaxy. Space itself is stretching. And the Quran mentioned this fourteen centuries ago. Al-Bāsiṭ is not just expanding your chest or your provision — He is expanding the very fabric of existence. Preparing the heart in Shaʿbān means making room inside yourself for what Ramadan will bring, just as the universe makes room for new stars.

On this verse

Innā la-mūsiʿūn — We are its expander. Present tense. Ongoing. The expansion has not stopped. Al-Bāsiṭ is expanding the cosmos right now, as you read these words.

Du'a

رَبِّ اشْرَحْ لِي صَدْرِي وَيَسِّرْ لِي أَمْرِي

(Moses) said: My Lord! relieve my mind. And ease my task for me

Surah Ṭā-Hā (20:25-26)

The same du'a that opened Month 5 — but now, in Shaʿbān, it is preparation. Expand my heart before Ramadan arrives so I can receive what You want to pour into it.

Hadith

ʿĀishah said: 'The Prophet (peace be upon him) used to fast until we thought he would never break his fast, and he used to not fast until we thought he would never fast. I never saw him fast in any month more than he fasted in Shaʿbān.'

Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 1969, Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 1156
