Day 363

Exalted Beyond Comprehension

20 Rajab 1448

الْمُتَعَالِي

Al-Muta‘ālīThe Most Exalted

عَالِمُ الْغَيْبِ وَالشَّهَادَةِ الْكَبِيرُ الْمُتَعَالِ

He is the Knower of the Invisible and the Visible, the Great, the High Exalted

Surah Ar-Ra'd (13:9)

Intention

Today, I will be at peace with not fully understanding Him — knowing that the pursuit of understanding is itself the highest worship.

Reflection

Al-Mutaʿālī: after 363 days of trying to know Him through His Names, the truth settles: He is still beyond comprehension. You know more than you did at the start — infinitely more — and yet you have barely scratched the surface. Al-Mutaʿālī is exalted above every description, every metaphor, every Name. And that is okay. The pursuit was the worship. The reaching was the prayer. The failing to fully comprehend was the humility.

On this verse

Grand and Exalted — still, after a year, beyond your full understanding. And that is the appropriate ending.

Du'a

سُبْحَانَ ذِي الْجَبَرُوتِ وَالْمَلَكُوتِ وَالْكِبْرِيَاءِ وَالْعَظَمَةِ

Glory be to the Owner of might, dominion, grandeur, and magnificence.

Sunan an-Nasāʾī 1049, graded ṣaḥīḥ

Said in rukūʿ and sujūd — the postures of humility. Even after a year, the only response to His exaltation is prostration.

Hadith

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 'Think deeply about the creation of Allah, but do not think about the essence of Allah.'

Abū Nuʿaym, Ḥilyat al-Awliyāʾ 6/67; al-Bayhaqī, Shuʿab al-Īmān 119 (graded ḥasan by al-Albānī in al-Silsilah al-Ṣaḥīḥah 1788)
