Day 135

Rising Above

28 Dhul Qi'dah 1447

الْعَلِيُّ

Al-‘AliyyThe Most High

وَلَا تَسْتَوِي الْحَسَنَةُ وَلَا السَّيِّئَةُ ۚ ادْفَعْ بِالَّتِي هِيَ أَحْسَنُ

The good deed and the evil deed are not alike. Repel the evil deed with one which is better, then lo! he, between whom and thee there was enmity (will become) as though he was a bosom friend

Surah Fuṣṣilat (41:34)

Intention

Today, I will not respond to any provocation with something lower than what I aspire to be.

Reflection

Al-ʿAliyy is The Most High — above everything, beyond everything, unreachable by anything. In the relational context of patience, this Name invites you to rise above the petty: the gossip, the score-keeping, the small retaliations that feel satisfying for a moment and hollow for a lifetime. Patience is an act of elevation — every time you choose not to respond to smallness, you rise.

On this verse

Repel with what is better — not with what is equal, not with what is justified, but with what is ahsan: more beautiful, more excellent, higher.

Du'a

سُبْحَانَ رَبِّيَ الْأَعْلَى

Glory be to my Lord, the Most High.

Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 772

Said in every sujūd — the lowest physical posture paired with the declaration of the Highest. When you put your face on the ground, you are closest to Al-ʿAliyy.

Hadith

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 'A man is not a good wrestler; a good wrestler is the one who controls himself when he is angry.'
