Do I have to pray 5 times a day? Can I combine them?
The 5 daily prayers are obligatory and one of the core pillars of Islam. There are legitimate provisions for combining and shortening prayers during travel and hardship.
Is nail polish allowed? Does it affect my wudu?
Standard nail polish creates a barrier against water, making wudu invalid. "Breathable" polish is a subject of debate.
Is smoking cigarettes or vaping haram?
The vast majority of modern scholars consider smoking haram due to its proven harm to health.

Do I have to pray sunnah prayers (extra prayers)?
Sunnah prayers are voluntary and highly rewarded, but you are not sinful for skipping them. The 5 daily fard prayers are what matters most.
Is it sunnah to eat with my hands?
The Prophet (peace be upon him) ate with his right hand and his fingers. It's sunnah (recommended) but eating with utensils is perfectly permissible.
Can women go to the mosque? I heard some people say it's better to pray at home.
Women are fully permitted to go to the mosque, and for a revert seeking community, it is highly recommended.
Can I listen to Quran recitation while doing other things?
Yes, listening to the Quran brings blessings, but try to listen with attention and respect.

Is music haram?
Scholars have differed on this for centuries. There are legitimate positions on both sides.
Is it haram to have a pet? I have a dog/cat from before I converted.
Cats are pure and welcomed in the home. Dogs are generally for outdoor purposes (guarding/service), but should not be abandoned if you already have one.
Can I have non-Muslim friends?
Yes. Islam encourages good character with everyone. The Quran warns against taking non-Muslims as protectors/allies against Muslims, not against friendship.
Is celebrating birthdays haram?
Scholars differ. Some consider it impermissible as imitation of non-Islamic traditions. Others consider it a neutral cultural practice.
Is drawing/art haram?
Scholars differ, particularly on drawing humans and animals. There is broad agreement that sculpture intended for veneration is prohibited, but two-dimensional art is debated.
Do I have to grow a beard?
The majority of classical scholars considered it obligatory for men. Some scholars, particularly in the Shafi'i tradition, consider it strongly recommended but not strictly obligatory.
Is the hijab obligatory?
The vast majority of scholars across all four schools consider hijab (head covering for women) obligatory. A minority of modern scholars hold a different view.
Is it really haram to have a mortgage/pay interest?
Riba (interest/usury) is clearly prohibited in the Quran. However, scholars differ on whether the prohibition applies equally in situations of genuine necessity.
Can I touch the Quran if I don't have wudu?
The majority of scholars say wudu is required to touch the Arabic script, while some allow it for digital screens or translations.
Can I pray in English while I'm still learning Arabic?
The prayer must eventually be in Arabic, but scholars differ on what a new Muslim should do during the learning phase.
I am an adult male convert. Do I have to get circumcised?
It is a highly emphasized Sunnah (or obligatory by some), but usually not required immediately if it causes harm or fear.
Is it true that women cannot shape or pluck their eyebrows?
The majority of scholars consider removing eyebrow hair prohibited based on hadith, though some allow cleaning stray hairs.
Can I shake hands with someone of the opposite gender?

I have student loans with interest. Is this haram? Do I have to quit school?
Interest (Riba) is a major sin, but you should not default on existing debt. Plan to exit the debt as quickly as possible.
Do I have to pray every prayer at the mosque?
For men, praying in the mosque is highly emphasized and carries 27x the reward. For women, praying at home is standard.
Is yoga haram? I do it for stretching.
Physical stretching is allowed. Doing positions with Hindu spiritual mantras or intentions is prohibited.
Cultural practice, not a religious obligation
Do I have to change my name?
No. You only need to change your name if it has a meaning that contradicts Islamic belief (like "servant of [a false god]"). Most Western names are perfectly fine.
Do I have to wear Arab/South Asian clothing?
No. Islam requires modesty in dress, not a specific cultural style. You can dress modestly in any clothing from any culture.
Do I have to eat only Arab/South Asian food?
No. Any food that is halal (permissible) is fine, regardless of which culture it comes from.
Do I have to speak Arabic?
You need to learn a small amount of Arabic for the ritual prayer (Salah). Beyond that, Arabic fluency is NOT required to be Muslim.
I have tattoos from before I converted. Do I have to remove them?
No. You do not need to remove existing tattoos if it is painful or expensive.
